Selfhood
Workshops: October 15 to December 1, 2018
Display as a part of BRAINSTORM: December 3, 2018 to February 17, 2019
City of Victoria display: June 25 to August 25, 2019
Working in partnership with Threshold Housing Society, a non-profit that helps at-risk youth attain independence through transitional housing, I created the program, Selfhood. Through six weekly workshops, youth participants from the Threshold Housing Society worked with local emerging artists, M. Ali Kahn, Libby Oliver, and myself. The participants created artwork based on the themes of identity, self-representation, and non-traditional self-portraiture through a range of mediums, including photography and poetry. Through fostering personal growth and artistic skill sharing, Selfhood’s goal was to inspire a creative future for the participants.
The participants’ finalized self-portraits were on exhibition as a part of BRAINSTORM at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. It was then later on display throughout Victoria (locations included Camas Book, Gabriel Ross, HI Victoria Hostel, Intrepid Theatre, and Opus Art Supplies) through a My Great Neighbour Grant.
